The project in a few words

Beats of Unity was a two-mobilities Youth Exchange organised by Madrid Outdoor Education from Spain, and Dreaming OPEnly from Germany.

The project aimed to explore and use the potential of Hip Hop and Art to develop non-formal education pedagogical methodologies for Youth Work, as well as to create artistic and cultural events in local communities. Hip Hop has an immense power as an artistic, social, and educational movement that can contribute towards the shift to a more inclusive and open society, and empower young people, especially those suffering from marginalisation.

Different Steps of the Project

Beats of Unity was a long-term process that aimed to have a tangible and consistent impact on the people, communities, and organisations involved. To achieve this goal we designed a specific educational path composed of different steps.

Advanced preparatory visit

Before the start of the first Training Course, one representative of each association took part in the Preparatory Visit in Leipzig. During this visit, we spoke about the needs of our target group and the program of the two Training Courses has been planned. We also made a risk analysis and developed strategies to ensure the quality of the project results.

First Training Course Mobility in Germany

In December 2024 the first Training Course took place in Leipzig. During the Training, participants, after getting to know each other and an introduction to the history of Hip Hop, its community-building, subversive power and its empowering potential, had the opportunity to get a glimpse of pedagogical activities using different disciplines of the Hip Hop Culture. In the final part of the Training the participants prepared and tested their own activities, to later bring to their local communities within the local actions.

Second Training Course Mobility in Spain

The second Training began with an evaluation of the local actions and the project’s process so far. The group then had a final moment to work on their activities and prepare them for the final event in Madrid.

Finally, the participants had the chance to spread their knowledge among the population of Madrid. During the dissemination event in Rivas-Vaciamadrid the participants raised awareness around the project’s topic. They proposed different activities for local youngsters, such as body expression, graffiti activities or beatboxing. The participants also had the opportunity to perform on the event stage with local artists.
