The project in a few words

“#SolaRPG” stands for “Sustainable Orientation of Learning Activities through Roleplaying Games” and is a 1.5-year Erasmus+ Key Action 2 Small Scale Partnership Project. The project is focused in the creation of SolaRPG, an open-licence RPG system, together with a campaign based on SOLA, a futuristic solarpunk universe.

The main motivation behind this project is to provide youth workers with innovative pedagogical methods that can assist them in their work with young people to raise awareness on the topics of sustainability and climate change, whilst developing soft skills. SolaRPG wants to achieve this with the approach of gamification,  which is expressed very naturally in RPG systems, and highly suited to non-formal education contexts.

The decision to set the game’s story in a unique futuristic solarpunk society developed during the project stemmed from our belief that the youngest generations need a bright and optimistic perspective on the future. SOLArpg wants to put a counterbalance to the climate doomism and anxiety among many young people. We are convinced that to build a better future, we first need to be able to imagine how it could be.

Objectives

  • Enhance the capacities and skills of organisations working with youngsters outside formal learning.
  • Strengthen the competencies of YWs in the field of digital education with innovative methods.
  • Develop a roleplaying game (RPG) system and a story campaign that exploits RPGs’ pedagogical potential.
  • Provide YWs with guidelines and materials for digital and physical use of the system.
  • Promote environmentally sustainable good practices among young people at the national and European levels.
  • Contribute to implementing the EU’s Youth Strategy and the UN’s SDG.
  • Reinforce synergies between partner organisations.
  • Get the first KA2 Small-Scale experience to broaden horizons.

Outcomes and Results

  • Creation of an open-licence easy-to-understand RPG system for YWs to use with youth groups to work on soft skills.
  • Creation of a campaign based on a futuristic “solar-punk-inspired universe for YWs to use with youth groups to raise awareness about the UN’s SDG and climate change.
  • Development of a digital and physical 70 pages player guidebook in English, Spanish, Italian and German, including:
  • Creation of four video tutorials explaining the system and all the necessary details for its use.
  • Creation of a website on which to publish the materials and outcomes produced, including all the necessary elements to play the game (tabletop online simulators, voice and chat message platforms, etc.).

SOLA: The Game

In SOLA, players step into the shoes of characters living in a futuristic solarpunk world, where harmony with nature and advanced technology coexist. Set against a backdrop of sustainable cities, renewable energy, and community-driven innovation, players will face various challenges that test their problem-solving skills, teamwork, and creativity. As they navigate these trials, they’ll engage with real-world concepts like sustainability, environmental stewardship, and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Through immersive storytelling, collaborative missions, and a system that encourages both individual growth and community engagement, SOLA offers a unique tabletop experience that blends adventure with meaningful lessons about our planet’s future. Whether they’re exploring eco-technologies, resolving community disputes, or restoring natural environments, every decision made in SOLA contributes to a better understanding of the balance between humanity and the Earth.
